HPSC HCS Exam Pattern – Prelims Exam(100 Marks)

The HPSC HCS exam is a three-stage exam and the exam pattern for each stage is different. The HCS prelims exam is the first stage of the HCS exam. The HCS Prelims exam serves as the screening exam only and the marks secured in the HCS prelims exam are not considered in the final merit. As per the new rules, the HCS Prelims result will be based on the marks secured in General Studies Paper only and the CSAT paper will be of qualifying in nature. The candidates need to score 33% marks in the CSAT paper.

The HCS prelims exam is an objective type exam comprising two question papers. The HCS prelims exam is conducted offline across the designated exam centres in the state.

HCS Prelims Exam – Negative Marking

There is a provision of negative marking in the HCS prelims exam. For each wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted from the candidate’s marks. We can say that the four wrong answers will neutralise one right answer.

HPSC HCS Exam Pattern – Main Exam (600 Marks)

HCS main exam is the crucial stage of the whole exam process. The marks secured in the HCS main exam are considered for the HCS result. The total number of candidates admitted in the HCS main exam will be 12 times the number of vacancies to be filled. Each paper will be of three hours duration. The candidates need to opt for two optional subjects from a list of 23 optional subjects. The HPSC main exam is a descriptive type of exam comprising five conventional essay type question paper.

HPSC HCS Exam Pattern - Personality Test (75 Marks)

The candidates who score marks equal to or greater than the HCS cut off marks will be called for the personality test at the HPSC office premises. No candidate will be called for the HCS interview unless the candidate attains 45% marks in the aggregate of all the main written question papers and 33% marks in the Hindi and English question papers. The number of candidates called for the HCS personality test will be three times the number of vacancies advertised

HPSC HCS Syllabus – Prelims Exam

There are two objective type question papers in the HCS prelims exam. The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) was introduced in 2016 in the HCS exam. The HCS Prelims exam serves only as a screening exam and hence its marks are not considered for the final merit list.

HCS Prelims General Studies Syllabus

The general studies have the universal syllabus for all the civil services exam across the country with minor variations. The general studies syllabus is important because it provides the locus of the preparation. The general studies syllabus decided the horizontal expansion of the preparation and the question papers describes the vertical expansion

The HPSC prelims general studies syllabus include the following topics

General Science

Questions on General Science will cover General appreciation and understanding of science, including matters of everyday observation and experience, as may be expected of a well-educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific discipline.

Current events of national and international importance

In current events, knowledge of significant national and international events will be tested.

History of India and Indian National Movement

In History of India, emphasis will be on a broad general understanding of the subject in its social, economic, and political aspects. Questions on the Indian National Movement will relate to the nature and character of the nineteenth-century resurgence, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence.

Indian and World Geography

In Geography, emphasis will be on the Geography of India. Questions on the Geography of India will relate to the physical, social and economic Geography of the country, including the main features of Indian agricultural and natural resources.

Indian Culture, Indian Polity and Indian Economy

Questions on Indian Polity and Economy will test knowledge on the country ‘s political system and Constitution of India, Panchayati Raj, social systems and economic developments in India. On general mental ability, the candidates will be tested on reasoning and analytical abilities.

General Mental Ability

Haryana–Economy and people. Social, economic, and cultural institutions and language of Haryana.

HPSC Prelims CSAT Syllabus

The CSAT was introduced in 2016 and its marks are counted for the HCS prelims result. It is a bit difficult for the candidates belonging to the humanities background. It was introduced to follow the UPSC exam pattern.
